Cost Per Lead (CPL)
What is cost per lead?
Cost per lead (CPL) measures how much it costs your business to generate one lead: a person who has shown interest in your product or service and left their contact details — through a form, a newsletter sign-up, an ebook download or a webinar registration.
Unlike cost per click (CPC), which only measures the first interaction, CPL looks at the next step: actually capturing the contact. That makes it a key indicator in B2B and in high-value sales.
How to calculate it
CPL = total marketing spend ÷ number of leads generated
Example: you spend €1,000 on a campaign and it produces 100 leads. CPL = 1,000 ÷ 100 = €10 per lead.
Calculate it per channel (Google Ads, LinkedIn, SEO, email) and per period, so you can compare like with like.
What is a "good" CPL?
There is no universal figure. A good CPL is one that sits comfortably below what a lead is worth to you: your lead-to-customer rate multiplied by your average sale, minus your costs. A €60 lead can be excellent for a €5,000 service and ruinous for a €50 product.
How to lower it
- Improve the landing page: shorter forms, a clearer offer and fewer distractions raise conversion without extra spend.
- Tighten targeting: exclude audiences and keywords that bring clicks but no leads.
- Add organic channels: SEO and content bring leads at a falling marginal cost.
- Measure lead quality, not just volume: a cheap lead that never buys is the most expensive one.
