If you have been working on your SEO for months, you are in Google's top 10 and you still cannot answer the question of why your website does not appear in AI Overviews, you are not alone. It is the new gap in SEO in 2026: you can dominate the traditional results pages and be invisible to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews at the same time. And the reason is not a core update badly absorbed; it is something more structural.

Why your site does not appear in AI Overviews even though you rank well

The retrieval systems that feed AI answers do not work like the ranking algorithm. Google Search ranks pages; language models extract passages that answer a question directly. A page can sit at position 3 and not contain a single citable passage.

These are the four most common reasons you rank and are not cited:

  • Content that cannot be scanned. If your content has no clear definition, no actionable list and no direct-answer paragraph within the first 150 characters, AI models pass it by.
  • No entity authority. AI engines prefer sources mentioned on trusted external domains. If you only talk about yourself on your own domain, your topical authority signal is weak.
  • No recent external mentions. AI citations draw on up-to-date corpora. If nobody has talked about your brand outside your domain in recent months, the model does not consider you relevant.
  • Content written to rank, not to answer. There is a real difference between text optimised for Google and text that answers a specific question in three sentences. AI Overviews reward the second.

The AEO checklist: optimising for answer engines and appearing in AI answers

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the natural evolution of technical SEO. It does not replace what you already do well; it adds a layer of structure designed so that language models choose you as a source.

Structure that invites retrieval

Every relevant article needs a TL;DR paragraph at the start with the direct answer, clearly marked definitions and ordered lists wherever there are steps or comparisons. It is the simplest signal to implement and the one with the greatest short-term impact. In our content marketing service we build these rules into every piece we produce.

Entity building off your own domain

Being mentioned matters more than what you publish yourself. Appearing in local media in your area, earning citations in sector directories and contributing to third-party content builds the entity authority that models use to decide whether you are a reliable source.

Schema as a technical signal, and no special files for AI

Structured data markup (FAQ, HowTo, Article) remains relevant because it helps engines understand what each page is about. What you do not need is a special file for AI: Google states that no llms.txt, AI text file or extra markup is required to appear in generative search, and we explain why in Google says GEO and AEO are myths.

The AEO gap and the 2026 core updates: acting before traffic falls

In 2026 Google has confirmed two core updates: March (27 March to 8 April) and May (21 May to 2 June), plus a Discover update in February and a spam update in March. Google has not published how much weight those changes carry in selecting sources for AI Overviews, so what can be stated is what is measured: every core update moves positions, and positions determine which pages are available to be cited. Without active monitoring, you find out about the impact when traffic has already dropped.

At Gecko Studio we have built an automatic alert system that cross-checks your position in the results with your presence in AI citations. The outcome is an AEO gap diagnosis: you know exactly which searches you rank for but are not cited in, and how much potential traffic is being left to competitors who do appear in the generated answers.

The standard plan lasts 90 days and covers:

  1. An audit of existing content: identifying which pages are close to the citation threshold and optimising them with AEO structure.
  2. An entity-building plan adapted to your market: local media, sector directories, collaborations.
  3. Technical implementation: relevant schema and structural adjustments on your highest-traffic pages.
  4. Monthly tracking with alerts on core update changes so you are never late.

Frequently asked questions about AI Overviews and AEO

What are Google's AI Overviews?

They are the AI-generated answers that appear at the top of Google's results. They use passages from selected web pages to answer the user's query directly, without the user needing to click any result.

Why does my site not appear in AI Overviews even though it is in the top 10?

Because the selection criteria differ from the ranking criteria. Google AI Overviews looks for passages with a direct answer, citable structure and entity authority validated by external mentions. Ranking well in the results is necessary but not sufficient.

Does appearing in ChatGPT or Perplexity require different SEO from Google?

Not completely different, but complementary. These engines use training corpora and real-time search. To appear in their answers you need AEO structure and mentions in authoritative sources.

Do I need an llms.txt file to appear in AI answers?

No. Google says you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup to appear in its generative search, and server logs show that the main AI crawlers ignore /llms.txt and read the HTML directly. The effort is better spent on citable content and external mentions.

Do Google's core updates affect my visibility in AI Overviews?

Indirectly, and that is what we have observed. Google does not document how its core updates influence the selection of sources for AI Overviews, but a drop in position after a core update can lead to disappearing from AI answers, even if you were regularly cited before. That is why both are watched at once, not just rankings.
