Responsive

💡 We apply this in: mobile web development

Responsive or adaptive design is a web development technique that allows a site to automatically adapt to the screen size of the device being used, delivering an optimal experience on mobile, tablet and desktop.

beginner 💡 We apply this in: mobile web development

Responsive design is the web development approach that ensures your site looks and functions correctly on any device — mobile, tablet, laptop or large screen. It is not about having two versions of the website, but a single one that adapts fluidly. With more than 60% of global web traffic coming from mobile devices, not having a responsive site is like having a shop without an entrance.

Technical principles of responsive design

  • Fluid grids: columns and containers are defined in percentages, not fixed pixels, adapting to the available width.
  • Flexible images: they resize proportionally without overflowing or losing quality. Modern techniques such as srcset serve images at different resolutions depending on the device.
  • CSS media queries: rules that apply different styles according to screen size, orientation and device resolution.
  • Mobile-first: designing for mobile first and expanding for larger screens, not the other way around. This forces content to be prioritised and the superfluous to be removed.
  • Fluid typography: font sizes that scale proportionally with the viewport to maintain readability in all contexts.

Impact of responsive design by sector

In tourism and hospitality, users search and book from mobile (often while travelling). A booking process that does not work perfectly on a small screen loses direct sales and pushes the user towards OTAs like Booking.

In real estate, property listings with galleries, maps and data sheets must be usable on any screen. Mobile property searches already outnumber desktop ones.

In e-commerce, the basket and checkout process on mobile must be seamless: every unnecessary field or over-small button costs sales.

Responsive design and SEO

Since 2019, Google has used mobile-first indexing: it evaluates and ranks your website based on its mobile version. A non-responsive site loses positions directly. In addition, Core Web Vitals are measured separately for mobile and desktop. In our technical audits, which cover 60 modules of analysis, responsive review is one of the fundamental elements: we do not just verify that the website adapts — we check that the user experience, speed and functionality are excellent across all devices. A professional responsive design is not an optional extra: it is a basic requirement for web positioning.
